So at this point you might be asking, what does Voltron have to do with the holidays? Bear with me…
Some of you will no doubt know Voltron already. For those who don’t, there were a few different Voltrons, but the most famous one here in the US was a giant robot made up of separate robotic lions. Basically you had the Voltron Force, five different operators, who each piloted a giant robotic lion – red, blue, green, yellow, and black.
Typically, in every adventure, the Voltron Force would encounter a threat that the lions couldn’t face alone. So then they would form Voltron – two of the lions making up the feet and legs, two becoming the arms and hands, and one (the back lion), becoming the head (and torso). Usually with their powers combined, they were more than a match for any threat, and when Voltron formed his blazing sword, little could stand against it.
So what does this have to do with the holidays? Well, much is made in this country about the War on Christmas, and there’s this weird divide between people who say “Happy Holidays”, acknowledging that there are other holidays than Christmas, and those who feel like they need to cling to Christmas lest it be wrest from their hands, somehow.
I have the benefit (or disadvantage, some might say) of not being tied to any religious tradition, so maybe this seems overly simplistic – but I see the holidays somewhat as Voltron. You have your Red Lion, clearly Christmas. There’s the Blue Lion, which has to be Hanukkah. Then there’s the Yellow Lion, which I could think of as Kwanzaa. The Green Lion can be Yule. And the Black Lion can stand in for Atheists and other non-denominational people. I’m sure I’m missing someone here, but again, bear with me.
Each of these lions can stand on their own. Each of these lions have their own strengths and differences. But when they come together, they’re stronger still. When they come together, very little can stand against them.
While I tend to favor Christmas in my personal celebrations, I have a great deal of respect for Holiday Voltron. Simplistic, I know, but take of that what you will. So Happy Voltron Holidays, everyone!
