I am going to be a published novelist

Many of you have seen this by now, but I can announce now that Pyr has decided to publish my SF novel, Falling Sky. This is what went out to Publisher’s Marketplace:

Rajan Khanna’s FALLING SKY, set on the west coast of North America years after a deadly plague has turned much of humanity into Ferals, survivors have taken to the air living in floating cities and traveling by airship, scavenging, but one team of scientists, protected by a scavenger turned mercenary, may have found a genetic breakthrough, to Lou Anders at Pyr, for publication in Fall 2014, by Joe Monti at Barry Goldblatt Literary (NA).

Publishing a novel has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I’m still processing the fact that it’s going to happen. Huge thanks go to my agent, Joe Monti and to Lou Anders of Pyr. I feel like I’m in great hands and I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Also huge thanks to my Clarion West classmates (CW ’08) who were the first people to suggest I take a short story I wrote there and expand it into a novel. Mary Rosenblum, Paul Park, and Cory Doctorow, too.

Someone pinch me…

Link Roundup

Over the past few weeks I’ve had a lot of columns and reviews and other things go up on various sites (well, two) and so I thought I should link to them here so that people could actually, you know, see them. Separated by site and in chronological order:

LitReactor

Over at LitReactor I did a recap of the Sandman Slim series to date just in time for the latest release (which I will be reviewing for Tor.com next week).

Also at LitReactor, I wrote two posts in honor of Pacific Rim — one was a Top 10 Giant Monsters post and the other a Top 10 Giant Robots.

Then there’s my review of Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

And finally, my Primer on Alfred Bester (Science Fiction great).

Tor.com

Over at Tor.com they’ve restarted my reread of The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. The first post, for Nine Princes in Amber is up now.

I also reviewed the Jim Butcher Dresden Files story from the upcoming anthology, Dangerous Women.

And just today, my review of Charlie Huston’s Skinner went up.

Please check them out if you have the inclination.

I apologize if I’ve been overloading on the self-promotion lately, but I wanted to mention that I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a discussion on The Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy. TGGttG is one of the best SpecFic podcasts around and I always enjoy talking to hosts David Barr Kirtley and John Joseph Adams. This time the topic was Weird Westerns, a subject near and dear to my heart. Because we had so much to cover, we mostly focused on film and television for this one. But we plan to do one covering books and comics in the near future. The episode also includes an interview with Melissa Marr. If you’re so inclined, please give it a listen:

Brief Readercon Recap

As previously mentioned, this past long weekend I was up in Burlington, MA at Readercon and I had a wonderful time. Most of my time was spent seeing old friends and meeting new people. I won’t post a list as I’d be certain to leave someone out, but if you were there, and I saw you, it was wonderful to see you.

Some personal highlights were seeing Zombies: Shambling Through the Ages at both the Prime and Lethe Press tables in the Dealer’s Room. It helped convince me to read my story from the zombies anthology, “Hauntings and Hungers on the Banks of the Vipasa” in the Altered Fluid reading on Saturday. It just so happened that the timing of the story worked out really well.

I also got a look at the ARC of Suffered from the Night, the other upcoming anthology I’m in coming out from Lethe Press.

Then there were all the great readings, the great beer, the parties, and all the writing inspiration. I always come back from the con feeling energized (at least creatively). Case in point, last night, while exhausted and trying to fall asleep, my fatigued brain combined two disparate concepts that I had been considering into one project that I have decided to start writing. Not that I need another novel in the queue, but, hey, I’ll take the inspiration.

Now to catch up on sleep and settle back into a more regular rhythm…

Readercon

Starting tomorrow, I will be attending Readercon up in Burlington, MA. I’ve been attending for at least five years, if not more. I don’t have any panels because I decided to go very late, but I will be part of the Altered Fluid reading that will take place on Saturday at 2:00 (not sure of the location — check your programs if you’re interested). I’m mostly looking forward to seeing friends, especially people I don’t get to see on a regular basis. If you’re going, hope to see you there.

Raining Fire – Out now!

Raining Fire, the third and final book in the Ben Gold series, was released on July 18, 2017. This book concludes the story begun in Falling Sky and Rising Tide. Publisher’s Weekly said, “Khanna wraps up his postapocalyptic adventure series with a capable page-turner…the airships, slavers, cannibalistic Ferals, and visceral action scenes make this a worthy culmination to the series.”

Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble now.

Rising Tide -Out now!

Rising Tide, the sequel to Falling Sky, was released on October 6, 2015. Publisher's Weekly said, "Khanna crafts a terrifyingly dismal picture of the future, raising the stakes by gradually stripping Ben of friends and support while throwing him into increasingly dire situations. His worldbuilding remains solid and unsettling, and he never loses sight of the human element. The cliffhanger ending is sure to leave readers on the edges of their seats, panting for resolution."

Falling Sky – Out now!

Falling Sky, my first novel, came out October 7, 2014 from Pyr. It's an adventure story set in a post-apocalyptic future with airships. Publisher's Weekly called it a "solid and memorable debut" while Library Journal gave it a starred review and named it Debut of the Month. For more information, please click here.
