I may have found another theme that might work. The question is – do people (readers) prefer a fixed width center column or variable width? I’ve used a variable width in the past, but I have a wide monitor.
What do people think?

The search for the perfect theme continues. I like the features of the Mandigo theme (current as of right now) but I’m not crazy about the stars. And I’d rather have boxes for the separate categories, but for now I suppose it will suffice. I like the way you can toggle off the sidebars and/or the individual entries. It makes it easier for me if I want to look for things.
But it’s not perfect, so I’m going to keep looking.
I just trimmed about 600 words off an older story of mine and tightened it up a bit. That always feels good. Especially since it’s one of my longer ones.
Cutting out whole paragraphs can sometimes be hard, but lately I’ve been fairly ruthless with this. I think first person narrations, or at least mine, are more prone to this kind of inflation and deflation because the conversational tone sometimes leads to unnecessary words, or words that add nothing. So I’ve been trying to take them out.
Precision is my ultimate goal…
I have an urban fantasy story that I want to send out, but I’m trying to decide on the best market. It has blatant magical elements, but in a modern, urban setting. I’ve already sent it to F&SF and Realms. I know it’s hard to say without having an idea about the story, but any suggestions would be helpful.
I really like the story idea I came up with yesterday, but I’m hating everything about the way that it’s coming out. On the one hand, that shouldn’t be discouraging – that’s part of the process of writing, right? You take raw, rough words and polish them until they shine. But on the other hand, it seems that the stories that seem to click with me in the beginning, with the voice at least, are the ones that are the most successful. So it’s a little worrying. But I won’t give up.
The other thing that’s bothering me is that some of my plots lately have seemed really simple and also predictable. It’s generally the other elements that I focus on, that get me into the story, but I think I need to spend a little time amping up the plotting.
I still wonder if I “get” short story writing…
